There is just so much to see and do around Rotorua. We are going to suggest a variety of activities which will appeal to different tastes.
A scenic drive visiting Lake Okareka, Blue Lake, Green Lake and Lake Tarawera. Near Lake Tarawera is the Buried Village of Te Wairoa, which is the ‘Pompeii’ of New Zealand. Covered in ash at the time of the Tarawera eruption, this was the site of McRae’s Hotel which was destroyed at the time. Dug out over the years the Buried Village is a great reminder of this past event. A beautiful walk though the park alongside a stream and then a walk to the Te Wairoa Falls make this a worth while trip. The café is a great place for refreshments. www.buriedvillage.co.nz.
For those who fancy their driving skills and want some real excitement there is nowhere better to go than Off Road New Zealand - www.offroadnz.co.nz. Located at Mamaku about 15km north of the city, Off Road New Zealand is not for the faint hearted. Can you dare to go!! 4WD Bush Safari, Sprint car racing, Monster 4x4 Thrill Ride, Clay bird Shooting, Archery and more. Loved by teenagers and adults alike. Rotorua has many rivers and on these there are a variety of White Water Rafting experiences, www.wetnwildrafting.co.nz, and www.riverrats.co.nz. Fully trained staff will ensure your full enjoyment. Not for the faint hearted.
Skyline Skyrides and the Luge are a major attraction in Rotorua. We have not mentioned them earlier as this attraction and thrill can be fitted in at any time during your stay. Take the 8 seater cabin Gondola to the top and from there you can luge down with the choice of 3 routes. This is fun thrill ride on a toboggan down the slopes of Mt Ngongotaha. A chairlift will return you to the top to start again. We would recommend that you ride early evening when the crowds are not so large and afterwards stay on for the buffet dinner at the Skyline Restaurant. The lakes area and in particular Lake Rotorua is world famous for trout fishing. With its Rainbow and Brown Trout, having a go at catching one of these beauties is a popular pastime. In New Zealand you are unable to buy trout, you have to catch your own. Fly fishing rods and gear are available to hire close by. For those who want to try their luck in the back country Nicara Lodge can organise a guide and helicopter access.
Should you wish to take things more quietly we can organize an opportunity to troll from a registered boat with a professional guide on Lake Rotorua which is open for fishing all year round. Pick up from the Nicara Lodge jetty, there is a 2 hour minimum. Boats take up to 4 anglers. If successful, Mike can prepare the catch for a BBQ or breakfast. Yum. Note, a license is necessary for all fishing. These can be obtained from your guide or some local retail outlets. Some lakes are closed during part of the year.
