Nicara Lakeside Lodge, Rotorua, New Zealand
Spring 2010

Greetings to all our previous guests at Nicara Lodge. The sun is shining and the weather warming after a long wet winter. The tulips are in bloom and rhododendron buds are showing their colour. I love spring for the perfume, colour and promise of summer. The tui birds become drunk from the sweet nectar of the blossoms.

Our big news is that in June we entered the Westpac Rotorua Business Excellence Awards and were selected as a finalist in Hospitality & Attractions. This was a huge category so we are delighted with our success.

The Awards Gala dinner was last week. Our family was together for the evening so it was a special time.

Laurel

Our sad news is that we no longer have Laurel. He succumbed to kidney failure and passed away in August. Hardy now rules the roost; actually, she always did.

Now the weather is warmer, we will soon be planting the Travellers' Trees purchased by our guests last season. These trees are planted near the Hamurana Stream in an area set aside for Travellers' Trees. Last year's trees are now well established.

Wrestler

Kiwi Encounter in Rotorua is part of the National Kiwi Recovery Trust. Nicara sponsored a cute little chick named Wrestler. He was incubated for 18 days before hatching on 12 April at 378.6g. He has now been released into the Waimarino region from where the egg was removed. You too can become a sponsor by following this link to Kiwi Encounter.

This winter we spent some time in Australia visiting friends plus the occassional business call. It was so exciting to fly direct from Rotorua to Sydney and return. So don't forget, next time you come to Rotorua from Australia, fly direct, eliminating the drive from Auckland.

As a result of our Qualmark assessment this year we were awarded Enviro-Gold, the first Guest & Hosted property in Rotoura & Bay of Plenty to receive this. We are delighted our efforts have been recognised.

Rotorua Museum
Rotorua Museum
The Rotorua Museum is housed in the iconic Bath House, New Zealand's first tourism building. Although completed in 1908, it was not finished to the original plans. The Rotorua Museum Centennial Trust, of which Mike is a trustee, raised $24 million to rectify this. The viewing platform and north wing are finished. The south wing is progressing well and the topping off ceremony will be 26 November. The new Don Stafford wing will house many artifacts from the local Te Arawa Maori.
