This is a geothermal wonderland, situated in the heart of the North Island, and one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist destinations. With so many different sights and activities on offer, Rotorua is exciting all year round and Nicara Lakeside Lodge is your perfect base from which to see it all.
Due to the uniqueness and the healing powers of the thermal waters and hot mud pools that are so characteristic of the city, Rotorua has attracted visitors from all over the world since the 1800s. It has always been promoted as a unique Spa destination.
The city is nicknamed 'Sulphur City', because of the thermal activity. The sulphur gives off an odour which is unique to Rotorua. While not a pleasant smell, it definitely adds to the visitor experience. However, there are no sulphur smells at Nicara Lodge.
Rotorua, based on a Maori word meaning ‘Second Lake’, was settled by the Maori people of the Te Arawa iwi (tribe). Rotorua still is the heartland of the New Zealand Maori culture, and visitors have many opportunities to experience the hospitality, customs and warm spirit of our indigenous people.
There are a number of Maori Villages and cultural activities throughout the city, from the captivating night time performance at Mitai which includes a traditionally cooked Hangi meal, to the fascinating Maori Village of Whakarewarewa. All cultural, adventurous and natural experiences have their own unique character and we are happy to advise you while staying with us.
And don't forget the adventure tourism with which Rotorua abounds - white water rafting, zorb, bungy, swoop, hiking, mountain biking and even more.
